Coda (1982)
Marketing Flat (UK)
From the collection of Brian Knapp
This rare original marketing flat was used by Swan Song sales representatives to promote the forthcoming release of Coda to UK record store merchants. The image featured here has long circulated among collectors as an alternate album artwork for Coda. However, the book included in the remastered Coda Super Deluxe Edition showcases several confirmed alternate artwork concepts; this particular image is notably absent. This strongly suggests that the design was never intended as an official album cover, but rather a quickly produced promotional piece created by Swan Song for advance marketing purposes.
Notably, this marketing flat ties in with an early UK Coda test pressing bearing the provisional matrix number “LZ10,” denoting the tenth Led Zeppelin album. The shared use of this working matrix number further reinforces the flat’s role in the initial promotional campaign, produced before final artwork and catalog details are completed.
